Windows 10 automatically updates drivers via Windows Update to ensure devices work correctly. However, you may want to prevent this—especially if a new driver causes problems or you prefer manufacturer-specific versions.
Using Device Installation Settings
-
Open Start, search for “Control Panel”, and open it.
-
Click System and Security > System.
-
In the left sidebar, click “Advanced system settings”.
-
Under the Hardware tab, click “Device Installation Settings”.
-
In the pop-up window, choose “No (your device might not work as expected)”.
-
Click Save Changes.
This stops Windows from automatically downloading manufacturer apps and custom icons (including drivers).
