System Restore in Windows 11 allows you to revert your computer’s system files and settings to a previous point in time without affecting your personal files. It’s a valuable troubleshooting tool if your PC starts misbehaving after updates, drivers, or software installations.
Before You Begin
- Make sure System Restore is enabled and restore points exist.
- Personal files (documents, pictures, etc.) are not affected.
- Recently installed apps or drivers may be removed.
Method 1: Run System Restore from Within Windows 11
Step 1: Open System Properties
- Click the Start button or press Windows + S.
- Type:
restore pointand click on “Create a restore point.”
Step 2: Launch System Restore
- In the System Properties window, under the System Protection tab, click System Restore.
- Click Next on the System Restore wizard.
Step 3: Choose a Restore Point
- Select a restore point from the list.
- Pick one dated before the problem started.
- Optional: Click Scan for affected programs to see which apps/drivers will be removed or restored.
- Click Next, then Finish.
Step 4: Complete the Restore
- A warning will appear saying the restore cannot be interrupted once started.
- Click Yes to confirm.
- Your PC will restart and begin restoring system files.
- Once complete, you’ll see a message: “System Restore completed successfully.”
Method 2: Perform System Restore When Windows Won’t Boot
If you can't log into Windows normally:
Step 1: Enter Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE)
- Power on your PC and force shut down by holding the power button.
- Repeat this process 2–3 times until “Preparing Automatic Repair” appears.
- When prompted, click Advanced options.
Step 2: Launch System Restore
- Go to:
Troubleshoot → Advanced options → System Restore - Select your Windows account and enter your password if asked.
- Follow the same steps as above to select a restore point and complete the process.
After Restore
- Your PC will reboot and attempt to resolve the issue.
- Check if the original problem is resolved.
- Reinstall any software or drivers installed after the chosen restore point.
