Windows 11 automatically installs updates to help keep your device secure and running efficiently. However, you can control when updates install and restarts happen to avoid interruptions. This guide shows you how to adjust update timing and behavior.
Method 1: Set Active Hours
Active hours tell Windows 11 when you're usually using your PC so it avoids restarting during that time.
Steps:
- Click Start → Settings (⚙️).
- Navigate to Windows Update → Advanced options.
- Click Active hours.
- Choose:
- Automatically adjust active hours (based on your usage), or
- Manually set active hours:
- Set the Start time and End time for your workday.
- Close the Settings window — changes are saved automatically.
Method 2: Pause Updates Temporarily
Pause updates if you want to delay them without changing deeper settings.
Steps:
- Open Settings → Windows Update.
- Click the dropdown next to Pause for 1 week.
- You can pause updates for up to 5 weeks (35 days total).
- To resume updates early, click Resume updates.
Method 3: Schedule a Restart for Updates
If updates are pending and Windows requires a restart, you can schedule it.
Steps:
- Open Settings → Windows Update.
- If a restart is required, click Schedule the restart.
- Turn on Schedule a time, then select a date and time that works for you.
Tips for Managing Updates
- Restart manually during off-hours after installing updates.
- Enable "Notify me when a restart is required" for more control.
- Consider scheduling update checks manually if you’re on metered internet.
